A Taste of Tuscany in Istria: A Day Trip to Motovun from Poreč
Your host at Casa Luisa, Glen, invites you to discover one of Istria’s most enchanting inland towns – Motovun. Known for its truffles, rich history, and spectacular hilltop views, Motovun makes for a perfect half-day escape from the coast. And to make the trip even more special, we’ve added a delightful stop along the way.
Step into History: The Story of Motovun
Just 45 minutes from Poreč, Motovun is nestled in the heart of the Istrian countryside. The landscape surrounding it feels like something out of Tuscany – rolling hills, lush vineyards, and stone-built villages. But Motovun’s beauty is more than skin deep.
Centuries ago, when the city of Venice was rising from the lagoon, builders came all the way to Motovun for its prized wood. The Mirna River was once large enough for boats to reach the area, and Motovun was even considered a coastal city at the time. On their way back, the Venetians would stop in Novigrad to collect stone, meaning that both the wood from Motovun and stone from Novigrad played a part in building the floating city of Venice. A remarkable and little-known story that connects Istria to one of the world’s most famous cities!
A Delicious Detour: Pilato Winery
Before heading straight to Motovun, we recommend a stop at the Pilato Winery, located just 20–25 minutes from Poreč. This family-owned winery is a true gem and a peaceful spot to pause and enjoy the Istrian countryside.
Pilato produces exceptional wines such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Malvasia, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their wine tasting experience is warm and personal, set in a cozy and inviting space. Guests can also enjoy local cheese and Istrian ham, making it a perfect start to the day. With such quality and charm, it’s a stop you won’t regret.
Welcome to Motovun: The Truffle Capital of Istria
As you continue your journey, the hilltop town of Motovun will come into view—an iconic old town rising from the surrounding greenery. Once you arrive, prepare to be amazed by the panoramic views of the Istrian hills and neighboring villages like Vižinada and Grožnjan.
At the entrance to the old town, you’ll be greeted by friendly local merchants offering everything truffle-related you can imagine:
Truffle salami
Truffle olive oil
Truffle schnapps
Even truffle chocolates and spreads
And of course, restaurants serve the region’s most beloved dish: fresh Istrian pasta with truffles. It’s a culinary experience not to be missed.
Take your time to wander through the charming streets, admire the stone buildings, browse the artisan shops, and simply soak in the peaceful, timeless atmosphere. Whether you're a food lover, a history buff, or simply someone who enjoys beautiful views and a relaxed pace, Motovun is a must-see during your Istrian holiday.
Final Thoughts
This half-day trip from Poreč combines the flavors of Istria, its fascinating past, and breathtaking landscapes. From the cozy wine tasting at Pilato, to the truffle-scented streets of Motovun, this is more than a journey—it’s a true Istrian experience.
